Lesson Plan 1-

Lesson Plan 2-
Scavenger Hunt through Your Mouth
Taylor Nicholls
Unit Overview

Overview

This lesson will involve an activity where the students will have a chance to navigate on the computer individually. They get to do this in a computer which is something that is new to these 2nd graders. I created a word document that is a scavenger hunt that will give students questions and websites to investigate certain things about teeth and the care they need. The questions that the students get to explore are: How many teeth do we have, do you know what a tooth looks like, why are teeth important, why do teeth have different shapes, what is the best way to brush, what is a cavity, what are the five best steps to take in order to have the best smile. They are to answer the question in their head. Once they have answered the question they click on the box which is hyperlinked to a website where the answer will be given and brief description of question. This is a fun activity where students feel they have control over their education and have fun learning.
Student Audience
This unit will cover Language Arts and Health. The students will learn basic human needs, self-awareness, vocabulary development, organizing ideas, personal hygiene, care of teeth, and body parts. This is designed for the 2nd grade level.
Timeframe
This lesson will take the students 40 minutes to explore.
Rationale
I am teaching this unit because having good hygiene and good teeth is a good life lesson. If a student never brushes their teeth and is not familiar with how important it is to take care of them, in the long run they will suffer. People will get teased and suffer from a lot of other diseases if hygiene and their health is not a priority. Parents should know about this because dental insurance should be something that every parent has. Across the United States a lot of people aren’t getting this because of the recession. It should be a priority because a lot of diseases can come from it and it can ruin someone’s confidence and self esteem if they have rotting teeth and a gum disease.
Unit Objectives
Students will be able to know how many teeth they have, what a cavity is, the best way to brush, why teeth have different shapes and steps to take in order to have a good smile.
Unit Standards
The state curriculum standards that this unit should seek to address are the following; Explain why hygiene is important for good health, demonstrate the steps for proper hand washing, and explain positive outcomes from brushing and flossing teeth daily.
Variations or Adaptations
There are a couple adaptations that could be used in this lesson for Special Ed students. A student that has limited motor skills could use a key guard. A key guard helps children with unsteady fingers avoid striking unwanted keys. It will increase the student’s accuracy, keep the hand in place. A miniature keyboard could be used for students with a limited range of motion to access all of the keys. Students who have more severe disabilities can use a pointing or typing aid to press the key boards. These devices can be worn on the head, strapped on the chin or held in the mouth or hand.
If a student has a hard time with controlling a mouse they can use a trackball or a joystick. A trackball remains stationary so that only movement of the ball moves the cursor. A joystick can activate the computer with different parts of the body. Another adaptation would be pairing the student with another kid in the class to work on this scavenger hunt together. Kids really enjoy helping out at this age!

Lesson Plan 3-

The Importance of Eating Healthy
Taylor Nicholls
Unit Overview

Overview
I have created a basic word document. The students will head to a computer lab and explore the wonders of learning through technology. This word document starts out with a list of why it is important to eat healthy and take care of your body. On the first page I have a picture of a broken bone. This indicates the lack of calcium and demonstrates to the student what will happen if you don’t feed your bones the right nutrients. There is another picture that says, “DANGER FAST FOOD KILLS.” This has a link to a website that tells you all about what ‘fat’ is. Kids hear about fat but they have never been shown or educated about it at their age. As we go further down the page, I have a picture of water and a picture of food. Above the picture it says, “How long can your body live without food or water? Click below to find out.” Once the students click on each picture it will give them the answer to the question. This question should show the students how important it is to drink lots of water and provide the best nutrients for your body. The last page is an interactive page for the students. There are two educational YouTube videos and list of healthy restaurants that students can take their family to. This word document is starting these students off in the right direction with learning the new technology of the 21st century.

Student Audience
This unit will cover Social Studies, Language Arts, Science and Health and Safety. The students will learn basic human needs, self awareness, construct visual images while listening, organizing ideas, good eating habits, observation of everyday life, familiar things, listening skills and vocabulary development. This lesson is designed for the 2nd grade level.

Timeframe
This lesson will take the students 40 minutes to explore.

Rationale
This unit is an introduction into the health of the human body, what foods we need and the liquids we need to keep us going. Children need to learn at a young age that nutrition is the most important thing for a long and healthy life. Obesity in the United States is growing at a fast rate and parents need to be aware of the foods their children are consuming. Fast food restaurants have become a habit for a lot of families. Teaching students at a young age what fast food and eating unhealthy does, can prevent a lot of problems in the long run. As a teacher I hope parents can have fun with food in a healthy way at home, get involved with what their children eat and help explain obesity and the hazards of it.

Unit Objectives
Students will be able to identify each food group and what is in each one, know what a good food is and what is a bad food, learn a new variety of vocabulary words dealing with health and nutrition, and be able to understand the importance of good nutrition and liquids.

Unit Standards

The state curriculum standards that this unit should seek to address are the following; Categorize foods into the major food groups, Identify a variety of foods in each of the food groups that are healthy choices, Identify foods and beverages that are high in added sugar, explain positive outcomes from brushing and flossing teeth daily and generate examples of healthy alternatives.

Variations or Adaptations

As a teacher you will always have a special needs child in your classroom. There should always be adaptations set in place so that the student with special needs can participate with the rest of the classroom. The adaptations for this lesson will be the same as the adaptations for the scavenger hunt.

Lesson Plan 4- This lesson consists of a research project. The students were given a set of four research questions. The students were given links to websites and five book references. Since they are 2nd graders I made it a little easier since this is their first time with word and the internet. Attached is my tumblr where the students will find the research project and also my shelfari which contains all the book references.

Lesson Plan 5-

Pictures to Explore your Teeth and Health!
Taylor Nicholls
Unit Overview

Overview
This lesson will involve an activity where the students will have a chance to navigate on the computer individually. They get to do this in a computer lab which is something that is new to these 2nd graders. I created an animoto which is a program thats allows me to create a video of picture that allows the students to learn visually. The first video contains pictures on how to keep a healthy lifestyle and how to keep a healthy mouth as well. The second video will take us on a series of pictures that shows us what eating healthy will do for you in the long run. I will be narrating this video so the students can follow along and learn from the pictures.

Here is an audio to go with the Video with my voice!
Audio for this video

Lesson Plan 6- This lesson will consist of a hands on project with technology. The students will be able to creat a voice recording on VOCAROO. This is a website that will allow the students to be creative and come up with any voice recording of their choice. In this case I have created a project that will be fun and take lots of creativity. As a class they have three options of what they want their voice recording to be. They can create their own radio show on healthy foods and a healthy lifestyle, they can talk about a visit to the dentist, or they can pick three healthy restaurants and tell me why someone should eat there. As parents your child can email this to you, family or their friends. Should be fun! Click on the link below to see what a Vacaroo looks like and voice recording I did so you all have a sneak peek of what were doing.Your Own Vacaroo
